About Your Drains
Keeping the entire plumbing system in a home, or business, working smoothly is essential and drain cleaning is on of the parts of this system that often needs attention.
Pipes draining the sink, bathtub, shower, washing machine, dishwasher, and other places in the house, are often subject to blockage. However, not all drain problems are easily solved. Some of these problems occur in the sewer line. Sewer drainage problems often develop because the pipes have outlived their expected life of 20 to 30 years. This is a more common occurrence in old galvanized, cast iron or clay pipes, which can crack, rupture or break.
Newer sewer pipe breakage can be caused by loose joints, installation errors, poor design, cracks, roots or other damage. Regardless of the age of the line, when clogged, it can lead to sewage backing up into your house. This is not only a health hazard but can cause major water damage as well.
There may be some signs of a sewer problem prior to the backup. These could include a sewer smell, toilet bubbling when flushed and gurgling noises in the toilet or drains. A big sign is when all the drains are slow at the same time. When this happens, you should contact a licensed plumber that also handles sewer line issues. At Atlantis Plumbing, we have repaired and replaced thousands of sewer and drain lines.
When water is backing up just in the kitchen or bathroom sink, it is called a secondary line and the clog is usually confined to that area. One sign of a main line sewer clog is water surfacing at the lowest point in your house, typically the basement drain. Another sign is the toilet overflowing or water backing up in the shower or bathtub.
How will the drain get fixed? It may take using a cable (also called an auger or drain snake) down the sewer pipe to try to clear it. If the problem is caused by things such as paper towels, feminine hygiene products, hair or other items, this will usually clear the line. However, if that does not work, we may recommend a camera inspection.
With a camera inspection, we will be able to see if the line is cracked, broken or has other problems. This camera has a closed circuit television video screen and allows for a clear view inside the sewer line. This allows the plumber, as well as the homeowner, to see what the problem is. Often, in older pipes, the problem is tree roots. They not only crush the pipes but, when seeking water, grow inside.
If the problem is found in the sewer line and there is a cracked or broken sewer pipe, we will recommend replacing or repairing the sewer line. We may be able to offer several options, depending on the situation. For example, digging up the line and replacing it with a new one or using a trenchless sewer replacement process. The latter process eliminates most the need for digging up asphalt, landscaping or other areas that take time to replace.
Prior to beginning a trenchless sewer replacement, it is necessary to remove any tree roots or other things that are blocking the line. This is done by a mechanical rooter or hydrojetting. Hydrojet cleaning is done with high-pressure water jets, which not only remove grease but tree roots as well.
The Pipe Bursting method of trenchless sewer repair typically uses a metal pipe bursting head, pulling a new seamless HDPE pipe, that is pulled through the old sewer line by a cable. This breaks up the old line and completely replaces it. This method is very reliable and saves time and money over a traditional dig up.
Choosing the trenchless sewer replacement method offers a number of benefits. With all the work being done underground, you eliminate much of the excavation equipment and piles of dirt in the yard as well as damage to landscaping, driveways, walkways, porches and so forth.
